printing with wildflower seeds

Plantable seed paper is compatible with various printing methods, but it can present challenges due to the uneven surface created by the seeds.

Offset Printing

Some plantable seed papers can be used with offset printing, but the seeds need to be small so they aren't protruding from the paper. This is because of the pressure using during ink transfer during offset printing. The pressure can crush the seeds which will prevent them from germinating. The paper's texture may also require some adjustments to ensure smooth ink transfer. Offset printing on seed paper isn't something our studio offers as it can cause a lot of wastage and isn't suitable for short runs which is something we specialise in.

Digital Printing

Digital printing is a modern and efficient printing technique, especially suitable for short print runs and personalised designs. Any dry toner presses that use heat to fuse toner to paper are unsuitable for plantable seed paper printing because the heat will destroy the seeds. Digital inkjet printing on seed paper is a much better option for two main reasons. The first is that it is a heat free printing process which prevents damage to the seeds. Secondly, unlike offset printing, no pressure is used during inkjet printing. Instead, the ink is sprayed down through tiny nozzles which ensures good ink coverage on seed paper, even if it contains larger seeds.

Foil Blocking (Hot Stamping)

Foil blocking, also known as hot stamping, is a decorative technique that adds metallic or special effect foil to the surface of the paper. Wildflower seed paper can accommodate foil blocking, enhancing the visual appeal of your printed products. The random placement of the seeds on each sheet can cause problems during the foil blocking process so some adjustments need to be made and often testing is required before a production run.

Whilst wildflower seed paper is compatible with these printing methods, it's essential to work with a printing company experienced in handling seed paper. The unique texture and the presence of embedded seeds require specific considerations to achieve the best printing results. Our knowledgeable team will be able to guide you on digital inkjet printing and foil blocking on seed paper to help ensure the seeds remain intact during the printing process. We have extensively tested and adapted our production workflow to accommodate seed paper printing and are experienced in handling it on a daily basis. We also regularly plant our seed paper offcuts to ensure germination.

Using wildflower seed paper for your printing needs allows you to create environmentally friendly materials that can be repurposed by planting and nurturing beautiful wildflowers, promoting sustainability and eco-conscious practices.
