Create interesting textures. People love running their fingers over spot UV, to feel the bumps of the raised finish.
Use spot UV on top of printed elements. Spot UV is highly accurate, which means it can be applied on top of printed elements such as, text and fine lines. For this reason, it's often referred to as 'digital embossing.'
Make use of repetition. One simple way to create an effective spot UV design is to repeat a specific element. This could be a symbol related to your company, your logo or simply an unrelated pattern using lines or dots.
Use spot UV 'blind.' Spot UV is at its most effective when used without changing the colour beneath it. When applied to a large block of colour, the glossy finish is enough to distinguish spot UV design elements from the background, meaning that really subtle, sophisticated images can be created.
Be sparing. As with many things related to design, less is more. Sometimes, just a small amount of spot UV can be incredibly effective.
DON'T..
Go overboard. Some cards are almost entirely covered in spot UV. We find that spot UV is most effective at around 25% coverage. If your design is simple, you can get away with more and still create a very high-end looking card.
We don't recommend using full bleed spot UV. If your spot UV artwork goes right to the very card edge, it may 'crack' slightly during guillotining. Many customers still choose to have full bleed spot UV designs, but this is something to keep in mind.
