Double-sided feather flag printing

Posted by Peter Saunders on Sunday, January 05, 2014

Many people assume that all feather flags are printed double-sided. The majority of feather flags are in fact printed single-sided on knitted polyester. It's this material that creates the illusion of double-sided printing. Knitted polyester is porous which means the ink permeates through to the reverse side of the feather flag. This creates a vibrant rich print on both sides which is where the double-sided flag printing confusion sets in. The reverse side of the flag is in fact a show-through of the front side.

The show-through is of course the main flag design in reverse so it isn't ideal for viewing or reading.

The advantages of single-sided feather flags

Despite single-sided feather flags only reading correctly on one side they do have their advantages. The first is that they are cheaper to produce as only one layer of material is usesd. The second advantage of single-sided printing is because only one layer of material is used the flag is extremely light and will flutter in the wind very well. Single-sided feather flags are ideal for locations such as forecourts or close to buildings where the flag will predominately only be seen from one side.

How we create double-sided flags

Many of our clients desire their flags to read correctly both sides. It may be that their flags are located at an exhibition or in an open space where both sides of the flag will be seen. This gives their flag maximum marketing value as their message can easily be read on both sides.

We are able to print feather flags, teardrop flags and backpack flags double-sided. This process involves printing the flag full colour on one piece of knitted polyester material. Once printing is completed we then take the artwork and reverse it so it will read the correct way on the opposite side. The flag artwork must be amended as the flag shape will be different for the second side. Once the second side is printed on another layer of knitted polyester material we then add a layer of light-block PVC between the two printed sides. The light-block PVC is added to stop each image showing through to the other side, it also creates better colours and gives the feather flag a much more professional finish. Without the additional layer in between both images would show-through on the opposite side.

Double-sided feather flag printing does have it's disadvantages. Double-sided flags are more expensive to produce as they require double-sided printing and an additional layer of light-block PVC. With 3 layers of material used to produce them, double-sided feather flags are also heavier than single-sided flags. Depending on the size of your flag and it's location, you may need a heavier base for a double-sided flag. If the flag is located outdoors and will be in the wind it may flutter less as it is heavier. A heavier base will also definitely be required outdoors as with three layers of material the feather flag will be less porous in the wind.

Cost of double-sided feather flags

Double-sided feather flags are more expensive that single-sided flags. The actual cost of double-sided printing is determined by the size and shape of the feather flag being printed as this will dictate the size of the material and the amount of ink.
