CARD THICKNESS

The width of the edges of a business card or invitation refer to thickness.

We determine our card stock thickness in GSM (Grams per Square Meter). The higher the GSM, the heavier the paper stock is. Thickness is not directly correlated to the card weight. Although a card may have a higher thickness, it still may have more flexibility.

The thickest single layer card stock we use is 450gsm silk, which often has a matt or soft touch velvet laminate finish. Any card weight above 450gsm involves gluing sheets together to make it thicker. Uncoated coloured boards such as Vanguard and Colorplan can be duplexed (2 sheets glued together) or triplexed (3 sheets glued together). Duplexing and triplexing increases the weight and thickness of the card, as well as, opening up the option for duotone edges and coloured cores.

Finishes such as embossing are only available on stocks up to a maximum of 500gsm. Finishes such as, debossing and foil stamping can be done on stocks from 120gsm for letterheads and compliment slips, all the way up to 1050gsm.
